[Forrest Outpost]
To say she was well rested was inaccurate; she was, however, feeling
relaxed, stress-free and happy. Little sleep had been had, which was not
big surprise considering the circumstances, and waking up next to him
this morning had warmed her heart and put a smile on her face that just
couldn't be wiped off even if she would have tried to. The spring in her
step betrayed her good mood. A long shower had woken her up enough, and
the good mood and happy thoughts, and part adrenaline kept her awake and
not feeling the fact she had only a few hours of sleep in between. Now,
wearing her dress uniform, the official flag one since the entire brass
was present, she was on her way to the Command Centre to go over the
last details of the preparations.
"Good morning," she said cheerfully as she stepped out of the turbo lift
into the command centre. "So.... we better be ready! Kick off of the
events is at 1100."
"We're ready, Ma'am." Solano said and nodded. "Everything has been set
up in the main observation lounge. Ensign Bertinelli has double checked
the communications channels and sound system. Commander Thompson
reported that the mechanism for the champagne bottle is in place and
ready to run."
"Excellent work by everyone. That leaves the speeches. All crew except
those specificially assigned to stations during the ceremony are to
report to the observation lounge, Senior Officers are expected in dress
uniform." Suzanna said.
A crewman rang the chime at Ambassador Soval's quarters at 1045 hours to
escort him to the Naming Ceremony. He was informed by the otherwise
silent crewmember that the ceremony would be held in the Observation
lounge on Deck 8.
Suzanna had left before he woke up, though Garroway vaguely remembered a
kiss on the cheek. He showered and dressed, and finished tying his
necktie just in time to be escorted to the ceremony. He tried some
small talk with the petty officer, but apparently being former Starfleet
held less interest than being a government lackey. It was quiet walk,
indeed.
/////// 10:50 Observation lounge deck 8 //////////
The Observation lounge on deck 8 was the largest they had, it was
normally used as a recreation, relaxation place for the crew. It had a
couple of resquencers that made a variety of drinks and there were
usually snacks available on tables along the wall. The room had several
large viewports and that is why Suzanna had chosen it.... the view of
the planet Njord below was breathtaking and illustrated that this was
not a Sol system planet but far, far away.
The normal tables and comfortable chairs had been removed, several rows
of simple chairs had been placed in the room instead. A small podium had
also been built with on it a standard with a microphone. On the podium
were also a few chairs, the people that would be on the podium were
DaSilva, Garroway, Soval, Winter and she would be there as well. The
senior officers would be seated in the first row opposite the podium and
the press would not be far behind.
Once they arrived, Soval saw a large room filling quickly with people.
He was led to the raised stage where there were several chairs; however,
Soval was far more interested in the view of the blue planet beneath
them. What was the name of it? Ah, yes. Njord. He had heard that the
planet was mostly made of water, a thought that unnerved him a little.
He took his seat, his eyes scanning the crowd. He saw Sub-Commander
Selek and vowed to speak with him when the opportunity presented itself.
The first people were starting to show up and it didn't take long for
all the chairs to be occupied, on the podium and opposite it. All the
senior officers were present, as were the press. If only she could turn
off those cameras, but Suzanna knew how important they were in this
case. Still, it almost felt like having to make a pact with the devil.
At 1100 sharp, Solano stood and blew the whistle at which point everyone
jumped to attention. Suzanna stepped up to the microphone. "Welcome
all... to those of you that have travelled here from afar just for the
Naming ceremony, thank you for making the effort. The station is a long
distance from Earth. A lot of people have worked long and hard to make
this happen, and a big thank you goes out to them as well. That includes
all of the current crew assigned to the station, as well as all the
engineers and construction works that put the modules together in the
Sol system. As you can see, we also have some esteemed guests who each
have busy schedules, yet who have made the time and effort to come here.
Each of them will speak here today."
Suddenly, the sound of many conversations was broken by a shrill whistle
that hurt his ears. Following the room's lead, he stood.
Once Commodore Batenburg had finished her statement, she nodded to
Soval. He went to the podium. "I was invited here to speak, not only
as the representative of the Vulcan government, but also as the liaison
between the Earth and Vulcan Joint Mission project, a project that
Admiral Forrest felt very strongly about. It was the very topic we were
discussing when his life ended so tragically and senselessly. I grieve
with you all, and with myself, at his loss, but I cannot think of a more
fitting tribute to his memory than this space station were are on. May
his memory live long in all of us, and may you all prosper in your
individual endeavours." He returned to his place, and seeing that
everyone else had now sat down, he sat as well, waiting for the next
speaker.
Soval's speech was moving and Suzanna smiled and thanked him for it
before announcing the next speaker, Ambassador Garroway.
Seated behind the podium, it was an effort not to smile at Suzanna's
rear end as she opened the ceremony. Once Soval gave his short speech,
though, it was time to get serious. Garroway stood in his black suit
with UEG lapel pin, and approached the podium.
"We stand at the threshold of a new era," he began. "Five years ago we
had one starship to explore our little corner of the galaxy. But look
at us now. Enterprise, Shenandoah, Endeavor, Challenger, Yorktown,
Meridian, and Intrepid active in service. Trope, Columbia, and Phoenix
already served their time, short but bright. Jupiter Station is
churning out Ensigns and crewmen, and the fleets of Neptune, Venus, and
Sol-class cruisers have grown exponentially. And here, today, we have
Forrest Outpost.
"In five short years we have turned opportunity from potential into a
new frontier. We have a stable presence farther from our home star than
has ever been attempted. Now, some may think this is just another notch
on Starfleet's belt. That these things are expected of Starfleet and is
only the next logical step. Small potatoes, in the grand scheme. I can
tell you it's *not* small potatoes. I grew up on a small colony called
Terra Proxy, far from Earth, Mars, and our many stations. I know what
it's like to have to be self-sufficient until the next supply run comes,
which may be anywhere from a month to a year. Alone except for your
fellows, and without any defenses except what you can muster yourself.
Forrest Outpost is much more prepared for this life than many beginning
colonies, but her goals are much more grand than simple survival.
Forrest Outpost is a new base of operations for exploration and
learning; a new strategic staging point for defense and protection. What
these Starfleet personnel do here will ripple for centuries to come.
*This* is history being made. *This* is important.
"To the first crew of Forrest Outpost, I salute you. You who will be
manning Humanity's greatest achievement since the Warp Five Engine that
started this journey. The journey will not end with you, but you are
the milestone without which we could not advance. You're in our hearts
and minds, our thoughts and prayers. Good luck, Forrest, we're with
you." Garroway turned back to his seat and sat down.
"Thank you, Ambassador." Suzanna smiled at Thomas after he finished his
speech. There was much more in her eyes as she looked at him, then
guarded her expression a bit more as she looked back towards the room.
"Our next speaker is Commodore Maynard Winter, Fleet Services
Commander."
Maynard stepped up and took a deep breath; "I've had the privilege of
serving in Star Fleet during the rebuilding process, as a result of the
Mercy Campaign. Our progress from the moment the last shot was fired, to
the founding of this site has been phenomenal."
"We have a lot of work ahead of us, but rest assured... this station
will serve as a beacon not only for us, but for our friends and allies
as well. Let this place serve as a reminder of our adventurous spirit,
and our commitment to progress. Let the students at Star Fleet Academy
see what this place will become, so they may one day surpass us in their
own efforts to push further into space."
"In conclusion, I want to recognize all of the engineers at every level,
all of the planners and everyone involved on this project. Your hard
work will reflect on every panel of this place. You're the reason why
our commitments will be seen through till the end. Thank you." He nodded
at Admiral DaSilva as he stepped down.
"Thank you, Commodore." Suzanna said and looked back at the room. "Our
final speaker and the person that will actually throw the bottle is
Commander of Starfleet, Admiral Amy DaSilva." Suzanna stepped aside and
stood at attention as did all Starfleet personnel as Amy stood and
walked up to the microphone.
"At ease.... After all the speeches and words already spoken, there is
little I can say that hasn't already be said. As Ambassador Garroway
said, this *is* important. Not just for Starfleet but also for Earth, a
stepping stone of our evolution and progress. We've made friends as
well as found some foes. And that will continue. No mission into space
is without dangers, yet that is the risks we take with exploring into
the unknown. Commodore Winter already said it, and I will repeat it, I
want to thank all the engineers, construction workers and anyone that
has been involved in the creation of this station for their hard work
and dedication."
Amy paused a moment, "And as Ambassador Soval already mentioned, there
is no more fitting name for this station and all that it stands for than
for this to be named after the man that led Starfleet as we took our
real first big steps into the unknown by allowing the Enterprise to take
an injured Klingon home. Fleet Admiral Forrest led by example, he
expected the best of humanity as we went out there. First the Enterprise
and then the other ships. Shenandoah, Endeavour, Challenger, Yorktown,
Meridian, Intrepid... Every one of the NX class ships has made a
difference. Everyone of them has helped Mankind grow. And as Ambassador
Garroway said... this is a stepping stone. This will allow us to
continue to grow and expand our knowledge... to explore the galaxy we
live in. To go on into the unknown and see what is out there... do what
so many of us have dreamed of when they looked up to the sky at night
and saw all those twinkling stars."
"So... without further ado, I'm honoured and feel privileged to be able
to name the newest Outpost in Starfleet in honour of Admiral Forrest....
Maxwell Forrest Outpost, in short, Forrest Outpost." Amy pressed the
button on a small device she'd been given by Batenburg. It activated a
lever which sent a champagne bottle flying, and hitting exactly the
intended mark on the hull, right above one of the view ports. The gold
coloured liquid splashed in a star pattern outwards, including over the
viewport.
"Commodore Batenburg Front and Centre." Amy called out, and Batenburg
stood and walked over, assuming a position of attention next to the
Commander of Starfleet. "In accordance with the authority granted to me
as Commander of Starfleet, I hereby place the United Earth Station
Forrest Outpost in commission, under the Command of Commodore Suzanna
Batenburg."
"I hereby assumed command of this station," Suzanna replied to complete
the formality.
"At ease, Commodore. Congratulations... and Godspeed to you and your
crew." Amy said and smiled.
